Final Fantasy XIV (English) free to play for 14 days (UPDATED)

UPDATE: Free trial also available for UK PS Plus member, only for PS4 version.
UPDATE2: Already available for US PSN members 2 weeks late from JP PSN. Link provided below. Use that instead.
NOTE: If you're coming here for Joysound, keep reading, it's in the later part of this post.

After almost six months late when US PC gamers can freely try whether Final Fantasy XIV is suit to their taste, the same privilege is now coming to PS4 and PS3 owners, and the thing we need for this is a Japanese PSN ID (which is a must if you are cross-region gamer), and ongoing PS Plus subscription on the same region. If you don't have Japanese PSN ID yet, here's a full-pictures tutorial: Setting up JP PSN (Incl. purchase tutorial), and if you don't subscribe Japanese PS Plus yet, well, the good news is Japanese PSN has the world's cheapest 30 days PS Plus membership at ¥514 ($4.33). Top ups are available from sites such as www.play-asia.com. Remember that in addition to Final Fantasy, if you subscribe now, you will also get Killzone: Shadowfall (English) to play freely as long as you are a member. Not enough? See our previous post for many other games you can grab and play for free as long as you stay a member.

UPDATE: We apologise since eventhough PS3 version of free trial still remain Japan PSN only, we are late to found out that the PS4 version free trial is also available on UK PSN. Folks who have PS4 and UK PSN may prefer that one instead since all registration process are in English. There is a catch though, that you also have to be a PS Plus member and the price for 30 days is around $10, more than double of that Japan PS Plus, and the PS4 IGC games are the same with US/HK, while Japan PS Plus offering you Killzone: Shadowfall (English).

UPDATE 2 : The free trial on UK PSN is now available for everyone without Plus membership. However no PS3 version is in sight, so if you wish to try the game in PS3 version you still need to get the game from JP PSN. It is only available until 24th so you may want to get it now.

UPDATE 3: Starting from December 23rd, the same game is being offered as free trial for 14 days on US PSN, for both PS3 and PS4 version. Just in time when the game is expired from JP PSN.

Here's the link to the game on PSN store.

PS3 Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn (English) 6.3 GB UK PSN

PS4 Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn (English) 10.6 GB US PSN

PS3 Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn (English) 6.3 GB US PSN

PS4 Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn (English) 10.6 GB JP PSN Expired

PS3 Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn (English) 6.3 GB JP PSN Expired

Before continuing, you need to know that the free trial have several limitation: The game is only playable until 24th and the free period will cease on 00:00 (GMT +9) December 25th. Maximum of 8 characters can be created (one for each servers) . Max gil is 20,000. You can only reach level 20 maximum, and several other restriction. After you purchase the game however, you can continue playing and there's no need to replay everything. Also you will need to create Japanese Square Enix ID. Read our home-made tutorial on how to create one. It is fast and easy.

Unrelated to Final Fantasy, Japanese PSN also got a free Karaoke app Joysound TV Plus. Anyone remember that Joysound Dive on PS3 was one of the region-locked app? Well apparently that app was taken down from Japanese PSN and replaced with Joysound TV Plus which is better, since it is available for PS4, PS3, and PSTV, and the best part of them all, it is now region-free. So if you are bored with SingStar and SingOn, plug your USB microphone again and try this one.

PS4 Joysound TV Plus Download Version 72MB
PSTV Joysound TV Plus 11MB

This app's target audiences are of course Japanese, so Japanese songs are the majority here, fans of Japanese Anime will certainly love it. K-POP segment is also available and the songs are available in Hangeul too. But the most important is that it also houses more than 7,000 popular and current English songs with English lyric and alphabet. All for 309 Yen ($2.6) for 24 hours, and just a little more than 1000 Yen ($8.6) for 30 days. No PS Plus subscription required even on PS4. Quite a deal.

The catch is you have to launch the app from your Japanese PSN ID, not your main ID. Since the subscription is only valid for the ID that purchased it. And the subscription is only purchasable in-game. You also need a fast internet connection, 10Mbps is the minimum. Slower a bit and the video will lag.

The app itself it quite English-friendly. While settings and notification are Japanese only, each part of the selection has its English translation directly below the Japanese one. Although some of them are lost in translation, like the charts and genre list are under Information menu. The songs are not listed alphabetically but rather listed by the Japanese sound A-I-U-E-O etc. But we think the menu that will be mostly used by English-speakers is the Search menu, just search the song or artist name and you'll be fine. While SingStar or SingOn might be the best for westerners, Joysound still deserves a try.

If you interested in singing Christmas song for free, SingOn on UK PSN offering several famous Christmas song for free to sing. Try that one too.
